Chiefs deliver on Andy Reid's promise to look at O-line combinations

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- When his team started offseason practice this week, coach Andy Reid indicated the Kansas City Chiefs would be looking at a lot of different offensive line combinations. Through the first three practice sessions, Reid delivered on his word.

The Chiefs unveiled a different starting line combination each of their three days of practice this week. Seven different players have started at least one full practice session on the offensive line and it's possible two who haven't, rookie Mitch Morse and free-agent addition Paul Fanaika, could get their turns in practice next week.

The latest move came on Thursday, when Donald Stephenson was starting at left tackle instead of Eric Fisher. Stephenson, normally the starting right tackle, is Fisher's top backup and Reid said he wanted Stephenson to get some work on the left side.

"It's the only way you can get Donald some reps there," Reid said. "We wanted to make sure we've got everybody covered.

"Actually, Fish has done a very nice job, so I wouldn't read anything into that. But we're staying consistent, moving people around."

Indeed, they are. Only left guard Ben Grubbs and center Eric Kush have been constants at their positions through the three days of practice.

Expect Fisher, the first pick in the 2013 draft, back in the starting lineup when the Chiefs resume practice next week. The Chiefs have shown no indication they are willing to give up on Fisher despite his two disappointing seasons.

Otherwise, the shuffling on the line will likely continue.

"We're kind of playing everybody in all different spots, so we don't even care," Reid said, referring to the line's eventual makeup. "We're going to find the five best guys, that's what we're trying to get to. I really don't care where they play, I just want the five best guys and then we line up and we go play."
