John Dorsey's drafts with the Chiefs: offensive line

In the days leading up to the NFL draft, we’ll look by position at the two Kansas City Chiefs drafts since John Dorsey became their general manager. It’s a small sample size -- the Chiefs drafted eight players in 2013 and six last year -- but we can still learn from it.

We’ll start with the offensive line.

Players drafted: Four

T Eric Fisher, Central Michigan, first round in 2013

C Eric Kush, California University of Pennsylvania, sixth round in 2013

G Zach Fulton, Tennessee, sixth round in 2014

G Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, McGill, sixth round in 2014

The Chiefs drafted more offensive linemen in the past two years than at any other position group.

That makes sense. Not only do they need five starters plus at least two or three reserves, but they’ve lost a lot of starters to free agency over the past couple years.

Keep in mind that two players who will at least compete to be starters this season, Donald Stephenson and Jeff Allen, are headed into the final years of their contracts. That makes the selection of an offensive lineman or two likely again this year.

Of the four linemen the Chiefs drafted, Fisher will start this season at left tackle, the line’s premium position. Kush is No. 1 on the depth chart at center, at least for now. Fulton was a starting guard as a rookie, though he is in jeopardy of losing that job after the Chiefs traded for one guard, Ben Grubbs, and signed another, Paul Fanaika.

Fisher was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in 2013. Otherwise, the Chiefs seem to believe they can hit on offensive linemen later in the draft.
