Here’s is this week’s draft edition of the Kansas City Chiefs mailbag. For the non-draft edition, please check back on Sunday. To ask a question for a future edition, send it to me via Twitter (@adamteicher) and tag it #ChiefsMail.
@adamteicher CB moves up priority list on draft w/ most recent legal issues of Sean Smith yes? #chiefsmail
— jmccarty1982 (@McCarty1982) April 17, 2015
@adamteicher: Cornerback should have been high on the Chiefs' draft priority list even before Sean Smith pleaded guilty to DUI and became subject to NFL suspension for a violation of the substance-abuse policy. Smith is in the last year of his contract and he's the only established cornerback they have, though Jamell Fleming and Phillip Gaines showed promise last season. It's time for the Chiefs to invest a high pick into a cornerback. Smith's possible suspension doesn't help matters, but the Chiefs shouldn't pick someone just to cover for Smith's loss for what might be two games.
@adamteicher What are the odds that the Chiefs might trade down in the draft, and what could they expect to get in other picks? #ChiefsMail
— John Steere (@SteereJohn) April 17, 2015
@adamteicher: Trades are impossible to predict this far ahead of time, but I think a trade down almost always makes sense if a team can get additional picks. The draft is a percentages game that's usually won by the team with the most picks. I like the idea of moving back a few spots, but not a lot of them.
@adamteicher What do you think about Bud Dupree as an option at ILB for KC. Some say he has the versatility to play inside #ChiefsMail
— Bennett Wyllie (@BennettWyllie) April 17, 2015
@adamteicher: The Chiefs will eventually need to replace Derrick Johnson, but it doesn't have to be this year. As for Bud Dupree, from Kentucky, he's a good player but probably best as an outside linebacker.
@adamteicher Where do you see Cameron Erving going and could the Chiefs trade back w/GB and still get him & an extra 3rd pick? #ChiefsMail
— Chief Running Tab (@gnoll235) April 10, 2015
@adamteicher: Cameron Erving, the center from Florida State, could go as early as the middle of the first round. The Chiefs are picking 18th and the Packers 30th, so the Chiefs would taking a considerable move back in the first round. I might want more than Green Bay's third-rounder for that kind of move.
@adamteicher If Danny Shelton falls to 18, do you think chiefs would take him? #ChiefsMail
— Jacob Matthes (@matthes_jacob33) April 17, 2015
@adamteicher: Danny Shelton is the nose tackle from the University of Washington. He looks like a solid run player, but might come out of the game on passing downs. If so, opponents would be able to scheme him out of the lineup. I think the 18th pick in the draft should be a three-down player, good enough to stay in the game and help his team no matter the situation. Plus, the Chiefs have Dontari Poe.
