Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. offers his picks for the Kansas City Chiefs and all NFL teams for the first three rounds of the upcoming draft. The twist is that this time Kiper isn’t predicting what the teams will do, but playing general manager for each team and making the picks as he would do.

Kiper lists the top needs for the Chiefs as wide receiver, inside linebacker, safety and defensive end. His four picks for the Chiefs -- they also have a compensatory pick toward the end of the third round -- are wide receiver Jaelen Strong of Arizona State, inside linebacker Stephone Anthony of Clemson, safety Damarious Randall of Arizona State and defensive lineman Gabe Wright of Auburn.

It’s not going to work out this way. The Chiefs won‘t get players at their top positions of need with their first four picks. They would never do anything so obvious. They are a team, remember, that in 2013 drafted Eric Fisher in the first round despite having Branden Albert at left tackle and last year selected outside linebacker Dee Ford with their top choice despite having Pro Bowlers in Justin Houston and Tamba Hali at his position.

I can’t say the Chiefs would be unhappy if it turned out this way. Reports recently surfaced about Strong and a broken bone in his wrist, putting in question his viability for the 18th pick in the draft.

But the Chiefs won’t be drafting just for today. As proven with the selections of Fisher and Ford, they’ll take more of a long-term view.

They’d no doubt be happy with a No. 2 wide receiver to pair with Jeremy Maclin, the long-term replacement at inside linebacker for Derrick Johnson and a safety and defensive lineman to compete for playing time.

Don’t expect it to happen. But we’re talking about the draft here and the best part of that is that it’s fun to dream.
