Chiefs would be happy with this haul of compensatory picks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The website overthecap.com projects the Kansas City Chiefs to receive four compensatory picks in the upcoming draft as a result of their net losses during last year’s free agent signing period.

If overthecap’s calculations are correct, the Chiefs would receive one extra choice in the third round, two additional choices in the fifth, and one more choice in the seventh.

The exact formula the NFL uses to award the 32 comp picks is mysterious, other than it’s based on the number of unrestricted free agents lost and the money in the contracts given to those players by other teams. That is then offset by the unrestricted free agents a team signs and the contracts given to those players.

The Chiefs last year lost some unrestricted free agents who received significant contracts with other teams, including offensive linemen Branden Albert (Miami Dolphins), Jon Asamoah (Atlanta Falcons), and Geoff Schwartz (New York Giants); kick returner Dexter McCluster (Tennessee Titans), defensive end Tyson Jackson (Falcons), and defensive back Quintin Demps (Giants).

The only free-agent contracts the Chiefs handed out worth more than $1 million annually were to defensive lineman Vance Walker and linebacker Joe Mays.

Coach Andy Reid indicated at the end of the season that the Chiefs were expecting "11-plus" comp picks. The Chiefs haven’t had their full load of draft picks since 2012. They traded their second-round pick in each of the past two drafts to the San Francisco 49ers in return for quarterback Alex Smith.

But the Chiefs have all of their picks this year, and would probably be happy if they also received the comp picks that overthecap calculates they might.
