Ranking the best players I saw in July

I’ve spent the past three weeks on the road getting a closer look at most of the top high school basketball players in the country. There was a stop at the Peach Jam in North Augusta, S.C., then off to the Global Challenge in Washington, D.C., followed by a trek to Las Vegas, where there were multiple events running all over Sin City.

Before I get to the guys I enjoyed watching the most over the past few weeks, I want to touch on the July recruiting period overall.

I know some are complaining about the new format in which coaches are allowed to go out from Wednesday night until Sunday for three consecutive weeks. I know it’s difficult for coaches -- and players -- to travel around the nation with just a day or so in between events.

But I’d keep it this way for another year instead of making another reactive decision without an effective solution. On too many occasions, the NCAA reacts quickly (whether it’s with academic requirements or recruiting regulations) instead of obtaining as much information as possible and then making determinations.
