Jacksonville Jaguars mailbag: Singing, trades and Star Wars

Got questions about the Jacksonville Jaguars? I’ll try to answer a representative selection of them every week. Submit your questions via Twitter to @ESPNdirocco.

On Sunday, I’ll answer the Question of the Week.

@ESPNdirocco: The only other position that seems realistic at No. 3 is wide receiver, and then it would only be Amari Cooper. The Jaguars aren't interested in any of the offensive tackles after signing Jermey Parnell. There aren't viable options at defensive tackle, linebacker or cornerback, either.

@ESPNdirocco: Sure. It's a physically tiring process flying across the country and meeting with coaches and GMs and emotionally tiring because you don't know if and when you'll have a job, so I certainly can see them breaking out into song. Something festive, for sure ... oh, wait, you probably meant sign. I think there's a better chance of Stefen Wisniewski signing than Greg Jennings because Jennings is at the end of his career and I assume he's looking for an opportunity to play for a contender. (Sorry about the jokes. I couldn't resist.)

@ESPNdirocco: The Jaguars view Aaron Colvin as their nickelback, which is essentially a starter because defenses are in sub packages more than 50 percent of the time, anyway. Remember, he only played in six games last season after returning from a torn ACL suffered in January. It will be interesting to see what he'll be like with a full offseason and training camp. I agree with you: I think Allen Robinson becomes the best of those three receivers.

@ESPNdirocco: I know there has been some interest, but I really don't see him getting traded before draft day, mainly because he's in the final year of his contract and is scheduled to make $6.65 million and have a cap number of $8.2 million in 2015. That's a lot for a team to take on, especially since Lewis is 30 and is not as good a receiving threat as he was. To restructure his contract, the Jaguars would have to add at least one year, and remember, Lewis would have to be amenable to taking a pay cut. Could something work out on draft day? Possibly, but the Jaguars aren't likely to get more than a fifth-round pick at best.

@ESPNdirocco: Scobee is in the final year of his contract but the Jaguars don't need to place a real high priority on drafting a replacement. Teams can find kickers off the street and the Jaguars have three other kickers already on the roster: Kasey Redfern, Derek Dimke and Jason Myers. The Jaguars have a lot of other needs and shouldn't waste a draft pick on a kicker at this point.

@ESPNdirocco: The Jaguars will draft a receiver at some point in the draft, but they don't have to do it high because it's a pretty deep group and they can get a quality player in the third-to-fifth rounds. They're likely looking at a slot receiver and a guy like Tyler Lockett would be a fit in the middle rounds. That being said, if the Jaguars believe that Amari Cooper is a true No. 1 receiver like Dez Bryant, Julio Jones and A.J. Green, then it wouldn't surprise me to see them take him at No. 3.

@ESPNdirocco: The Jaguars roster is much more talented now than it was when general manager David Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley took over and I believe the team should challenge a .500 record, which would be a significant improvement from the past three seasons. So there's a lot to be excited about. However: J.J. Abrams directing, way-cooler looking stormtroopers and lightsabers.

@ESPNdirocco: It's not necessarily being done for this season; it's being done to create more cap room in the future. Plus, Caldwell has a certain salary range for players and positions and Paul Posluszny's salary ($7.45 million in 2015 and 2016) and cap figure ($9.5 million in 2015 and $7.5 million in 2016) were out of whack. The Jaguars love Posluszny, too, and this was also a way of ensuring they can hang on to him for an additional season at reasonable money if they choose.

@ESPNdirocco: I think there are bigger needs, specifically running back and offensive line. Most people believe the Jaguars are going to take a running back in the second round and I'm leaning that way as well.

@ESPNdirocco: If they were to trade for Adrian Peterson - and that's what it would take because Minnesota apparently wants to keep him - then it'd be a surprise if they were to also draft a running back. I don't see them acquiring Peterson, though. They'd have to give up several draft picks and then deal with his outrageous contract: $43.25 million over the next three seasons.
