Former starting center Jonotthan Harrison adjusting to move to guard

INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison went from undrafted free agent to making the 53-man roster in 2014 to starting 19 games at center, including 10 straight at one stretch, to losing his starting spot after the team drafted what it hopes is its franchise center in Ryan Kelly last month to now working at guard.

“Guard definitely is a little bit different,” Harrison said. “Each day I feel myself getting more comfortable with the position and recalling different techniques used to play the position. I’m just here to work every day and work on getting better each day.”

Playing guard is a transition for Harrison. He said he played the position for a game against the Titans in his rookie season and he started a game at left guard while at the University of Florida. But the reality is, the best way for Harrison to get on the field will be at guard because the Colts didn’t select Kelly in the first round with the intention of him spending time on the sideline. Indianapolis also selected center Austin Blythe in the seventh round.

Right guard is an open position. The Colts are waiting for somebody to step up and take control of that spot. Hugh Thornton, who has started 32 games at guard, is not taking part in OTAs. Joe Reitz and Denzelle Good, who also is not taking part in OTAs, can play guard too.

It’s up to Harrison to take advantage of the extra opportunities given to him so that he can make sure he remains in the mix for the starting right guard job.

“I’m here to compete either way,” he said. “I’m just here to compete. You never know what’s going to happen, but either way, my goal is to have a starting role in this offensive line.”
