INDIANAPOLIS -- It’s uncertain how many of their own free agents the Indianapolis Colts will re-sign, but one player they definitely have interest in bringing back is kicker Adam Vinatieri.

Vinatieri turned 43 in December, but age truly is nothing but a number to Colts owner Jim Irsay. In Vinatieri, Irsay sees someone who still can kick the ball well and will help his team.

“We’d like to retain Adam,” Irsay said. “We believe he’s still kicking at a high level. He really takes care of himself.”

Vinatieri said at the end of the regular season that he has no interest in retiring. It’s understandable why he wants to keep playing considering that he’s 55-of-58 on field goals in the past two seasons and he’s missed only three extra points over the past six seasons. Vinatieri missed his first two field goal attempts last season, but then made his final 25 attempts.

Vinatieri and punter Pat McAfee were two highlights to what was a disappointing 8-8 season for the Colts.

“(Vinatieri) and Pat really complement each other,” Irsay said. “That’s been one of the strengths of our football team, those two guys. We do not underestimate what those two guys have meant to us.”

The Colts have 11 other free agents, including tight ends Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener and linebacker Jerrell Freeman, and Irsay said last week that “keeping your own guys is even more important than who you get in free agency.”
