Josh Cribbs on his debut: 'I still wasn't even at my best'

INDIANAPOLIS -- I walked up to Josh Cribbs at his locker after Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and asked the Indianapolis Colts' return specialist if he planned to have Josh Gordy buy him dinner after his penalty cost Cribbs an 82-yard touchdown on a punt return in the third quarter.

“Nah, no need for that,” Cribbs said. “It was good to be back out there."

Cribbs, whom the Colts signed last week, showed a lot of people what he's capable of doing. He took the opening kickoff 9 yards deep in the end zone and returned it 46 yards.

Cribbs later showed that he knows how to make up for a miscue when he misplayed a punt. He picked the ball up and was gone in a flash, leaving the rest of the Jaguars behind.

The play was nullified because Gordy was called for unnecessary roughness on the play.

“You could kind of see the legs, a little bit wobbly, but good enough to take one to the house,” coach Chuck Pagano said. “It was unfortunate that we had the call on the play that we got. It was good. It was good energy and it was good for our return game. I'm glad we've got Cribbsy on our team. He's going to do nothing but get better as he gets his legs, gets his strength and gets in better football shape. He's a dynamic guy. We've said it all along. That was a plus."

Cribbs finished with 64 yards on two kickoff returns and 48 yards on five punt returns.

“I still wasn't even at my best,” he said. “I'm still getting my sea legs, so to speak, back underneath me. We've still got a long way to go, but you got a preview of how good we are even when we're not at our best.”
