GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The first chance anyone got to see Ty Montgomery in an offseason practice, the Green Bay Packers rookie receiver stood out during the June minicamp.

The third-round pick did the same thing on Saturday in the first full-pads practice of training camp.

He showed a burst of speed as a ball carrier on an end around early in practice, opened as the No. 1 kickoff returner -- a job he held at Stanford, where he is the career leader in kickoff return yardage -- and made a leaping catch late in practice.

"Ty's a playmaker, strong, very powerful, obviously gifted," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said after Saturday's practice.

His acrobatic catch drew a large cheer from the crowd. He out-jumped rookie cornerback LaDarius Gunter, who has shown exceptional ball skills so far in camp, and hauled in a deep pass from rookie quarterback Brett Hundley.

"Anytime you catch a ball, it helps your confidence," Montgomery said. "Your confidence is never low, but when you go a couple of practices and no balls get thrown your way, you're kind of like, 'I'm a receiver. I need some balls.' But, no, I appreciated Brett giving me the opportunity. I'm glad I came down with it."

Here are some other quick-hit notes from Day 3 of training camp:

  • Real football: On Friday, defensive tackle Mike Daniels said he couldn’t wait to put the pads on because, "It's always fun to get back into real football, and we get to see what everybody is made of." Daniels sure showed that on Saturday. During the highly competitive one-on-one pass-rushing drill, Daniels won two of his three reps. He split against starting guard T.J. Lang and even the one he lost, he still got good push.

  • More from Mulumba: Outside linebacker Andy Mulumba, who looked good in shorts and helmets the first two days, kept it up in pads. He beat tackle Don Barclay in the one-on-one drill and made some impressive runs in the half-line drill. Mulumba missed all but two games last season because of a torn ACL. "All I need is to trust my knee, trust my workout and the way I've trained all offseason and it's probably going to show up on the field," the third-year pro said. "I think it showed up, but I've just got to stay consistent."

  • Jones struggles: Former first-round draft pick Datone Jones got off to a slow start in the one-on-one drill. He couldn't beat practice-squad guard Josh Walker in either of their two reps and his only win came against undrafted rookie tackle Fabbians Ebbele. Jones also spent time Saturday working with the scout-team defense. He has not addressed reporters since camp opened and has not spoken publicly since the NFL announced he would be suspended for the regular-season opener for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

  • Richardson cashes in: On the day he collected a $200,000 bonus, safety Sean Richardson got increased work with the No. 1 defense as the nickel defensive back. Richardson was owed a roster bonus on the third day of training camp as part of the one-year, $2.55 million contract he signed as a restricted free agent. The Packers matched the offer sheet he signed with the Raiders. "I thought he really had an excellent year last year with the opportunities that he had," McCarthy said. "We're looking for ways to have him more involved defensively."

  • Day off: There was no practice on Sunday and the players have the day off. Training camp resumes Monday with another full-pads practice at 8:20 a.m. local time.
