McShay might be reaching on Packers' pick

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- For weeks, Todd McShay did not have a single inside linebacker going in the first round of the NFL draft.

Now, eight days before the first round, he has changed his mind.

In McShay's latest mock draft, version 5.0Insider, he has the Green Bay Packers taking UCLA inside linebacker Eric Kendricks.

In his previous mock draft, McShay had Kendricks listed as No. 8 among players he considered for the first round but did not make the cut.

There's no question that inside linebacker is the Packers' greatest need, especially if they want to move Clay Matthews back to the outside on a full-time basis. But the Kendricks pick could be a bit of a reach at No. 30.

And if you listened to Packers general manager Ted Thompson on Wednesday during his pre-draft press conference, you know he believes that reaching gets you in trouble.

"If you take good, solid players that you know can contribute, albeit at a position that's maybe a little bit heavier, as long as you're taking good, solid players you're getting some value there," Thompson said. "If you reach and take someone that's not quite as good, then you may not be getting the same value. I know you don't believe that, but it's true. That's what we do."
