Looking at safety prospects for the Detroit Lions in the 2015 draft

The Detroit Lions are officially in draft mode from now until the end of April, so is time to look at some of the prospects that could end up in Michigan for the foreseeable future.

We looked at every position over the past couple of weeks, concluding today with safety.

Position: Safety

Need: Medium

Potential rounds selected: Round 2 to UDFA

Quick overview thoughts: Initially this appeared to be a pretty stable position, but the Lions brought in two safeties this week for pre-draft visits. It indicates they are at least looking at possibly drafting one -- and that player could end up as a replacement for James Ihedigbo in the future. Ihedigbo is missing voluntary workouts over a contract issue, and though that isn’t a big deal, he is also entering the final year of his contract and turns 32 this year. So at some point, Detroit needs a replacement. That could be Isa Abdul-Quddus or maybe a draft pick.

Some names to watch:

Damarious Randall, Arizona State (5-foot-11, 196): The No. 2 safety and No. 52 overall player according to ESPN/Scouts Inc., he could be in the second-round range for Detroit and had a pre-draft visit with the Lions. He has some position flexibility and was a returner at Mesa Community College before going to Arizona State. He has exceptional cover skills, above average ball skills and is average in instincts and run support according to his profile.

Anthony Harris, Virginia (6-1, 183): Another Lions pre-draft visitor, he is the No. 3 safety and No. 82 overall player in the draft. His profile has him with exceptional instincts, above average ball skills and average in run support and in coverage.

Jaquiski Tartt, Samford (6-1, 221): The No. 5 safety and No. 105 overall prospect, he could be a third-round pick for the Lions. His scouting profile lists him as average in every area (instincts, cover skills, ball skills and run support). His frame could be really good for a run-support safety. He also has good speed (4.53 second 40-yard dash) and had a 124-inch broad jump.

Durell Eskridge, Syracuse (6-3, 208): The No. 12 safety and No. 156 overall prospect, he could be around in the fifth or sixth round. Like Tartt, he is listed as average in every area. His height could be intriguing to teams, but he is likely a project.

Kurtis Drummond, Michigan State (6-1, 208): The No. 14 safety and No. 170 overall prospect, he is listed as having above average ball skills and instincts. He is listed as average in run support and below average in coverage skills. His 39.5-inch vertical jump at the combine was among the leaders for defensive backs. He could be an intriguing mid-to-late round pickup.

Dean Marlowe, James Madison (6-1, 203): The No. 18 safety and No. 252 overall prospect, Marlowe could be a seventh-round pick or undrafted free agent. He is listed as above average in run support, average ball skills and instincts and below average in coverage skills. His scouting profile also has him lining up both deep and in the box. He ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash.
