Over last week and this week, we'll be reviewing each position group for the Detroit Lions in multiple ways. We'll continue with the safeties Friday.
Every morning as part of the Roar, we'll have a quick statistical breakdown of that position group.
The safeties as a whole: The three safeties who played the most had strong seasons and as a position group, the Lions had 196 tackles, 11 interceptions and three sacks. That was led by Glover Quin and James Ihedigbo -- the starters -- along with third safety Isa Abdul-Quddus, who played both in place of Ihedigbo when he was injured and also in big nickel packages at points during the season. Quin made the Pro Bowl and Ihedigbo was an alternate.
The safeties as individuals (regular season):
Glover Quin: He played 977 snaps, making 73 tackles along with a NFL-best seven interceptions for 117 yards. He also broke up two passes. According to Pro Football Focus, opponents completed 24 of 36 passes on Quin (66.7 percent) for 265 yards and three touchdowns. He held opponents to 11 yards per reception and had an opponent passer rating of 76.5. He also had two tackles in the playoff game against Dallas.
James Ihedigbo: In 13 games, Ihedigbo played 774 snaps, making 71 tackles along with four interceptions, three forced fumbles, two sacks and a fumble recovery. He also broke up three passes. He added nine tackles and a sack in Detroit's playoff loss to Dallas. According to PFF, opponents completed 31 of 45 passes on him (68.9 percent) for 366 yards and two touchdowns. He allowed 11.8 yards per reception and had an opponent passer rating of 71.2.
Isa Abdul-Quddus: He played 278 snaps, making 29 tackles and breaking up two passes filling in for Ihedigbo or playing as a third safety. He had one tackle in the playoff game. According to PFF, he allowed 9 of 15 passes to be completed on him (60 percent) for 79 yards and two touchdowns. He had an opponent passer rating of 113.6 and allowed 8.8 yards per reception.
Don Carey: He played only 95 snaps, but made seven tackles and returned a fumble for a touchdown against Green Bay in Week 3. He had two tackles against Dallas in the playoffs. Opponents completed 7 of 10 passes against him this season for 38 yards and a touchdown. He had an opponent passer rating of 109.6.
Jerome Couplin: He played in eight games for Detroit this season, playing 11 snaps and making two tackles. He is no longer on the roster, having been picked up by Buffalo and then Philadelphia off the Lions' practice squad.
