Initial Detroit Lions draft outlook: Safeties

The college All-Star games are coming up over the next two weeks, with the NFL combine on the horizon in February.

Many players taken by teams in May will play in one of the three games for seniors or come from the underclassmen pool. Over the next two weeks, along with our positional outlooks for the Detroit Lions, we will give a few names to pay attention to over the next month. Remember, these lists will be fluid as the draft process continues.

Previous outlooks: Quarterbacks; Running backs; Receivers; Tight ends; Offensive tackles; Interior offensive linemen; defensive line; linebackers; cornerbacks

Senior Bowl:

No. 27 North, Kurtis Drummond, Michigan State (6-1, 205): He was named the Big Ten’s defensive back of the year and was named an All-American by some services. He finished his career with 233 tackles, 33 passes defended, and 12 interceptions for 148 yards. He has pretty good range, and his ESPN profile lists him with average cover skills but above average ball skills.

No. 44 North, Ibraheim Campbell, Northwestern (5-11, 210): He made 316 tackles in his career with 24 pass deflections and 11 interceptions for 184 yards. He is a four-year starter and has a reputation as a pretty fierce hitter -- something that defensive coordinator Teryl Austin likes, and would fit in well with Glover Quin and James Ihedigbo.

No. 4 North, Adrian Amos, Penn State (6-0, 214): He had 42 tackles, 10 passes defended, seven pass breakups, and three interceptions during his final season. He was a three-year starter for the Nittany Lions.

No. 6 South, Jaquiski Tartt, Samford (6-1, 220): He had 62 tackles and an interception as a senior. He was primarily a free safety for Samford, and was an All-American in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Others:

Eric Rowe, Utah (6-1, 201): He is primarily a free safety, but played cornerback as a senior. A four-year starter, he had 261 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 34 passes defended, and three interceptions.

Durell Eskridge, Syracuse (6-3, 207): Eskridge chose to leave the Orange early after making 182 tackles with 12 passes defended, and five interceptions in his three-year career. He also had 2.5 sacks. He is primarily a free safety, but his length is intriguing. He could be around on the final day of the draft, when Detroit would probably start looking for a developmental safety.
