Broncos DT Terrance Knighton wants a shot at No. 500

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Almost any time Denver Broncos defensive tackle Terrance Knighton is asked a question about his back-in-the-day moments in football, he is quick to say “I was a wide receiver, I've got the hands, best hands among the defensive linemen, I'll go get the ball.’’

The 330-plus pounder is a long way from being a pass-catcher these days, but hey the big man can dream can’t he?

So much so, with Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning poised to reach 500 career touchdown passes -- Manning is at 499 -- Knighton is hopeful his consistent calls to be in the team’s short-yardage offense are heard in time for the milestone.

Asked Wednesday for his reaction to Manning reaching No. 500 and what that number means in the big picture, Knighton made it clear he wants to be involved.

“I hope they throw it to me,’’ Knighton said. “The more records he breaks, the older he realizes he’s getting, I’m just happy to be a part of it and watch him. He works hard, he expects perfection in practice from himself and other guys. It’ll be a milestone for him, he’ll probably brush it off like it’s another touchdown, but I know it means a lot to him.’’

Knighton later said, “But I still want to catch it.’’
