Matt Harrison to start throwing in January

ARLINGTON, Texas – Left-hander Matt Harrison has pushed back his offseason throwing sessions from November to January.

Harrison has undergone three back surgeries over the last two seasons after winning 32 games from 2011 to 2012. In June, Harrison had spinal fusion surgery and last year had two surgeries to repair a herniated disk.

“I got only one shot at this,” he said. “I just have to make sure it’s right.”

Harrison said moving his throwing sessions into January isn’t a setback, but more of a precautionary move.

“It gives me more time to heal,” he said.

His return for 2015 is uncertain. The Rangers have invested in Harrison's future from a financial standpoint. In 2013, he signed a five-year, $55 million deal. He made $8 million last season and is scheduled to earn $13 million in 2015.

*Staff ace Yu Darvish (mild elbow inflammation) will go back to Japan and return to the States in mid-November, according to GM Jon Daniels.

Darvish will undergo an MRI exam, and if the reports are clean he’ll start his throwing program in December as normal.

“We’re expecting a clean scan based on symptoms and everything," Daniels said. "He'll then start his throwing program and go back to Japan."

*Martin Perez (Tommy John Surgery) said his rehab is on pace and he has a goal of returning around the All-Star break.

“I’m going to take my time and make sure everything is good,” said Perez, a promising left-handed starter who was the Rangers’ 2013 rookie of the year. “I want to help this team as much as I can. The focus now is to be strong for next year and just work hard and be strong mentally.”

Perez pitched in just eight games in 2014 before elbow trouble surfaced, eventually ending his season.
