Scott Baker joins Rangers bullpen

In desperate need of some arms in the bullpen, the Texas Rangers purchased the contract of pitcher Scott Baker and optioned outfielder Daniel Robertson to Triple-A Round Rock. To make room for Baker on the 40-man roster, the club transferred left-handed reliever Pedro Figueroa from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Manager Ron Washington said that Baker will be the team’s long man and that there are no plans to insert him in the starting rotation. As it stands now, Robbie Ross is still scheduled to start Sunday against the Boston Red Sox.

Baker, 32, was 4-1 with a 3.32 ERA in six starts for Round Rock this season. He gave up four earned runs in six innings in his last start, which was Friday in New Orleans. He has pitched at least six innings in all six of his starts.

Baker has a career record of 63-48 with a 4.15 ERA in 163 games (159 starts) in the big leagues with most of those starts coming in his seven seasons with the Minnesota Twins. He had Tommy John surgery in 2012 while in the Twins organization and returned in Sept. 2013 to make three starts with the Chicago Cubs.
