Michael Young leaves game as precaution

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Rangers first baseman Michael Young departed Wednesday's game earlier than expected because he landed awkwardly on his left thumb diving to ball earlier in the game.

Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine said the move was a "precaution" and the club will evaluate his thumb.

"It's fine," Young said. "I just hyperextended it a little diving."

Young said it happened in the second inning, when he dove to his right and snagged Mark Kotsay's hard-hit grounder. Young flipped the ball to Yu Darvish covering first base.

"My glove stopped and my face planted," said Young, laughing. He has a cut on his chin to prove it.
