Tony Romo to practice Thursday

IRVING, Texas -- When the Dallas Cowboys practice Thursday, Tony Romo will be there and he does not envision anything that will keep him out of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams.

Romo did not take part in Wednesday’s practice because of what coach Jason Garrett described as “tightness” in the quarterback’s surgically-repaired back. Romo took part in the morning walkthrough but spent practice in the weight room working on core strength and back exercises.

He did not have an MRI, according to Garrett.

Wednesday’s inaction was not dissimilar to the plan Romo went through in training camp. He missed seven training camp practices and never practiced more than two straight days. He took part in the first six regular-season practices and was listed as a full participant each time.

“It’s going to pop up,” Romo said. “I’m sure it’ll happen throughout the rest of the season. You’ll see a day here or there. It’s the same as the arm. Sometimes your arm gets [tired]. It’s just obviously more talked about because of having surgery on the back. You play this game. It’s a very violent, physical game, and you throw the ball a lot and you do all these things. Sometimes it’s just that tightness stuff comes up. You prefer obviously to do everything 100 percent of the time, but you can’t always do that. I’ll be fine. I’ll be good to go [Thursday].

Romo has been sacked seven times in 73 dropbacks in the first two games. According to the official play-by-play sheets, he has been hit an additional nine times. Romo has completed 63.6 percent of his passes and not looked completely comfortable in the first two weeks of the season.

He played in only 50 preseason snaps, sitting out the first and last preseason games as a precaution.

“You got to practice to be any good,” Romo said. “We all know that and I know that. You have to do that. At the same time if you need a day, same as Dez [Bryant] today, [Rolando] McClain, that’s just part of it. That’s the NFL.”

Wednesday’s practice focuses mostly on the running game with the players in full pads the only time during the week. Thursday focuses on third down and two-minute drills and Friday is short-yardage and goal line work.

But Romo was not about to rank which practice is best to miss.

“They’re all equally important,” he said.
