IRVING, Texas -- Pro Bowl receiver Dez Bryant set a deadline of this past weekend to get a contract extension done with the Dallas Cowboys because he doesn’t want finances to cloud his focus on football once the regular season begins.

That’s a decision respected by owner and general manager Jerry Jones, who has met with individually with Bryant at least twice over the last eight days to discuss the details of a potential deal.

Could the perceived disrespect of not getting a new deal become a distraction to Bryant?

“I don’t want to answer that in a way that would make it look like I’m in any way slighting the importance of getting a contract done. I’m not,” Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan. “On the other hand, there’s no one more focused on the practice or the game than Dez Bryant. Everything else, he’s pulled the shades down on, so he’ll be focused. He wants to get that business done. He, I’m sure, feels that ultimately at some point business will get done.

“He basically will be focused completely on his assignments and beating San Francisco this week and as we progress throughout the season. You’re not going to see, in my mind, a distraction.”

Bryant said last week that it’d “be a problem” if he felt disrespected, but that isn’t the case. He appreciates that Jones has spent as much time as he has discussing a deal. Bryant also figures that if he handles his business on the field, the financial matters will take care of themselves.

“The work that I put in, the love, the real love, the real passion that I have for this game overtakes everything,” Bryant said. “I honestly feel like what I do sooner or later I’m going to get what I deserve. I believe it. That’s why I don’t stress about. There’s no need to stress about it. It’s coming. I know it’s coming. So no need to worry about it.”
