IRVING, Texas – Unable to clear enough of the field to practice at Valley Ranch because of an ice storm, the Dallas Cowboys are moving Friday’s practice to Highland Park High School’s indoor facility.

The Cowboys attempted to clear enough space on one of their two practice fields, but coach Jason Garrett said they would have needed a few more hours to get it ready. The Cowboys also considered using the indoor facility at Coppell High School, which is closer to Valley Ranch, but the Highland Park facility is larger.

The team held its walkthroughs in the locker room for the defense and in the cheerleaders’ studio at their facility.

“We’ve got some good work yesterday and we’re hopefully we’ll get some good work tomorrow,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We intended on staying here. We just couldn’t get the field cleared off quickly enough. We have a good alternative.”

All of the players made it to Valley Ranch in the morning, but Garrett said the team had to send somebody to pick a “couple” of the players up.

“We have a lot of resources with the Dallas Cowboys,” Garrett said.

Garrett said some coaches spent the night at Valley Ranch but he went home. With the cold weather expected to remain through the weekend, the Cowboys could be in a similar position on Saturday, but Garrett had a message for the players.

“Let’s not overthink this,” he said. “Wake up earlier.”

With temperatures expected to be in the teens on Monday in Chicago, Garrett believes the team can benefit from practicing in the elements. Leading into the win against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Nov. 24, the Cowboys had a cold-weather practice that helped acclimate them to the conditions in East Rutherford, N.J.

The Cowboys have not had an indoor facility since theirs collapsed in May of 2009. They are moving their headquarters to Frisco, Texas, in 2016 and will have the use of a domed stadium in inclement weather that will also be used by high school teams.
