Thumbs-up for Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo

IRVING, Texas -- A quick observation of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and how he has played in preparation for the season opener on Sept. 13 against the New York Giants.

Looking back at Romo’s preseason work in 2014 maybe there should have been more worry with his lack of training camp practice and work in the exhibition games. He struggled in the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers with three interceptions.

Romo had much more work in practice this summer and he showed Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings he can still deliver the ball on time and come up with the improvisational play. He hit Terrance Williams in stride for a 60-yard touchdown. He bought time and found Lucky Whitehead for an 8-yard score.

In training camp, Romo was able to drive the ball down the field with his go routes and have the normal strength to fire the pass into tight windows. Romo even took a couple of hits against the Vikings and was no worse for the wear.

While the worry over the state of Romo’s back will always be there, it just isn’t at the forefront of the team’s mind as they get ready to play the Giants. Romo and the team will be mindful of how much he practices during the week and could continue the “Wednesdays off” routine that worked so well after Week 1 last season.

Romo’s back is stronger. His arm is stronger. His legs are stronger.

Does this mean he will be perfect against the Giants? Of course not but the Cowboys aren’t heading into the opener wondering what kind of quarterback he will be, like they did last year.

After seeing him in Oxnard, California, and for six series in two preseason games, the visual evidence suggest Romo will be just fine in 2015.
