Tony Romo expected to practice today

OXNARD, Calif. -- When the Dallas Cowboys hold their first padded practice of training camp today, quarterback Tony Romo is expected to practice.

Romo had a sty below his left eye treated after Thursday’s walk-through and did not take part in the afternoon practice. The sty had been troubling Romo for a little bit and the decision was made to treat it so it would not be an issue as camp progresses.

“I don’t want to get into specifics of what we did, but we don’t think it’s a major thing and we do anticipate him practicing today,” coach Jason Garrett said.

Romo tweeted his excitement in getting back in pads for the first time since last January’s playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Of more concern to Garrett is how his team, specifically the younger players, react to practicing in pads. Garrett laid out the expectations at a team meeting Friday night. Like every team, the Cowboys go as full speed as possible but without tackling in order to avoid injuries.

Garrett held the offense and defense back from competing against each other in the first two days of practice to help players get acclimated to camp.

“The big thing that everyone has to understand is that the rules are the rules and that this is the world we live in,” Garrett said. “If we are talking about yesteryear and what we did a generation ago really doesn't matter. It's not significant to what we are trying to accomplish here. What are the rules and make the most out of them. If we are in a walk-through mode with no helmets on and jerseys, we have to make that productive. If we have shells on and helmets, that has to be productive, and certainly if we have pads on it has to be productive.

“We are allowed a certain number of practices, and harkening back to the glory days does nobody any good.”
