IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys' run defense was not tested too much in Week 1 by the New York Giants because Eli Manning was forced to pass to stay in the game.

New York ran 14 times for 50 yards, and starter David Wilson was limited to 19 yards on seven carries before he was benched.

This week the run defense figures to be much more tested by the Kansas City Chiefs. Jamaal Charles had 77 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown in the Chiefs’ Week 1 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“He’s a great back, great elusiveness, great speed,” linebacker Sean Lee said. “He’s got a ton of ability. If we don’t gang tackle and get to him it’ll be a tough day for us. We’re going to have to rally and find a way to get to him.”

Charles ran for 1,509 yards in 2012 with five touchdowns, and is another reminder of the poor choice the Cowboys made in taking Felix Jones in the first round of the 2008 draft. Charles, a third-round pick that year, has three 1,000-yard seasons, three games with more than 225 yards rushing and four runs of at least 80 yards to his credit. Jones never had more than 800 yards rushing in his four years with the Cowboys.

“He’s got all-class speed and he can turn the corner on anybody,” safety Barry Church said.
