Ferns' Project 135 under way for U-M

Not that Michigan needs any extra help on the recruiting trail, but the Wolverines have gained a new recruiter for the 2014 class. Linebacker commit Michael Ferns (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville) has been promoting Michigan to fellow recruits left and right.

Ferns has taken it upon himself to start something new and special, creating what he calls Project 135. The idea is simple, but it's one that could spread quickly.

"The idea behind Project 135 is that we're trying to put together the best class possible for 2014," Ferns tweeted. "Every time someone commits, I'll send one of these nice blue shirts out. Then, as commits wear the shirts to events, we'll get the attention of other potential recruits who may not have been looking towards Michigan at first."

The picture and idea spread like wildfire on Twitter and throughout message boards. Ferns might not know this, but he has created a successful marketing campaign. Recruits have already started to reach out to him about the idea, and he believes he will accomplish his goal.

"Everyone I talk to normally has picked up on it without me telling them about it. So Twitter has definitely helped spread the word around," he said. "I'm trying to build the top recruiting class in the nation by the time signing day comes around."

One of Ferns' and Michigan's main targets, offensive lineman Mason Cole (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake), took notice immediately. Cole and Ferns exchanged tweets about the project, showing that it's already proving to be a great recruiting tool.

Tight end target Nic Weishar (Chicago/Marist) also took notice of Ferns' new venture, and also believes it's a great idea.

"I think it's pretty awesome. It really shows how close the class is going to be when it's all said and done," he said. "I think something like that will definitely help with recruiting."
