CINCINNATI -- When the Cincinnati Bengals signed punter T.J. Conley on Wednesday, they did so with the expectation that he would come in and give them an extra body at the position between now and the conclusion of training camp.

Teams often sign multiple punters and kickers, only to let the reserves go before the regular season begins. It's a practice done primarily to save the starters' legs, while also grooming backups in the event something happens with the first-string players before the end of training camp.

In Cincinnati's case, Conley comes on board just as lead punter Kevin Huber makes his return from a jaw injury suffered after taking a blindside hit on a punt against the Steelers last December. Huber is expected to be at full health long before training camp kicks off July 23.

One look at Conley's contract and it's clear: The Bengals don't anticipate him being around much past late August.

The former Jets and Browns punter who hasn't appeared in a game since 2011 was signed to a one-year contract worth $495,000, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He didn't receive any guaranteed money. He and linebacker Dontay Moch, a former Bengals draft pick who returned to Cincinnati after being claimed off waivers from Arizona, are the Bengals' only signees this offseason who won't earn guaranteed money this season. Moch also was signed to a one-year deal.
