Here's a look at the White Sox's win in New York on Friday night.
How it happened: White Sox starter
Jose Quintana came into Friday’s contest riding a streak of 16 scoreless innings, which didn’t last the game’s second hitter –
Curtis Granderson hit a two-run homer to right. Quintana didn’t have the electric stuff he had displayed these past few weeks, giving up six runs over eight innings. He was, however, helped by a huge offensive night from his teammates in what turned out to be his third win of the season. The White Sox’s four-home run power surge was led by a pair of solo shots from
A.J. Pierzynski with
Paul Konerko and
Alexei Ramirez also going deep. Making his first major league start, New York’s
Adam Warren lasted just 2 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits.
What it means: The White Sox are hot. They have won four in a row and seven of their past nine. With Friday’s win, the White Sox also improved to 23-14 on the road. The Sox also gained a game on Cleveland to expand their lead in the AL Central.
Outside the box: Per ESPN Stats & Info, Paul Konerko’s third-inning home run was his 14th of the season and the 410th of his career. It was his 21st home run against the Yankees as a member of the White Sox. No player in franchise history has more career home runs when facing the Yanks.
What’s next: Jake Peavy, a hard-luck loser in each of his past three starts, will take the mound against New York’s
Hiroki Kuroda.
