Here's a look at the White Sox's 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Thursday night.
How it happened: For much of the game, the White Sox failed to capitalize on their chances. That changed in the 9th frame, when, following an error on a tailor-made double-play ball,
Dayan Viciedo hit a three-run bomb to give Chicago a 4-3 lead that held up.
Dylan Axelrod, making just his second start of the season, gave the Sox an impressive effort, holding a potent Yankees lineup to two runs in seven innings. Prior to Viciedo’s homer, the Sox’s only run came on De Aza’s solo homer in the 5th. De Aza was 4-for-5 on the night. New York starter
Ivan Nova went 7 1/3 innings giving up just six hits and a run. New York added what looked like an insurance run with Mark Teixeira’s solo shot off
Hector Santiago in the 8th frame. The Yanks scored two in the 5th on doubles by
Alex Rodriguez and
Robinson Cano.
What it means: With their win, the White Sox held serve in the AL Central. Cleveland’s win in Baltimore means Chicago’s lead in the division remains at 2 ½ games.
Outside the box: With his four-hit effort on Thursday, De Aza is flirting with the .300 mark. In a season full of surprises – Phil Humber’s perfect game, Dunn’s resurgence, etc. – De Aza’s breakout campaign is one of the bigger ones.
What’s next: Jose Quintana, who has given up just one run in his past three starts, will look to stay hot as he faces New York’s
Adam Warren, who will be making his major league debut.
