Cubs acquire LHP Rex Brothers

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs acquired lefty reliever Rex Brothers from the Colorado Rockies for minor league pitcher Wander Cabrera, the team announced on Wednesday.

Brothers, 27, a five-year veteran who saved 19 games for the Rockies in 2013, was designated for assignment last week. Last season he split time between Colorado and Triple-A Albuquerque. Overall, Brothers is 16-11 with a 3.42 ERA and 20 saves in his career.

Brothers is the third reliever the Cubs have added to their 40-man roster in the last few days as they attempt to fortify their bullpen. Righty Andury Acevedo signed a 1-year deal last week while the Cubs picked up lefty Jack Leathersich off of waivers from the New York Mets. Creating a deeper bullpen was one offseason goal of the Cubs.

Cabrera, 18, went 4-3 with a 2.34 ERA in 14 appearances with the Cubs' Dominican Summer League team.
