Cubs' cut 40-man roster down to 37

CHICAGO -- In advance of free agency beginning next week the Chicago Cubs cleared room off their 40-man roster by outrighting three players to Triple-A Iowa, including former 2007 first round pick Josh Vitters.

Vitters, outfielder Ryan Kalish and infielder Chris Valaika all cleared waivers, allowing the Cubs to send them to the minors.

Additionally, pitcher James McDonald elected free agency after spending the year on the disabled list.

The Cubs' 40-man roster stands at 37.
