Garza to have new scan near elbow

CHICAGO -- Injured Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza is scheduled to have a scan on his right elbow this week.

Garza has been rehabbing a stress reaction in the bone above the elbow that first surfaced in a game at St. Louis in July. The injury not only ended his season prematurely, it prevented the Cubs from moving him for prospects at the non-waiver trade deadline.

The scan is part of a regularly scheduled checkup and will let the Cubs better assess Garza’s progress moving forward.

In other injury news, club president Theo Epstein said Tuesday that Ian Stewart is making progress after wrist surgery ended his season prematurely. The Cubs must decide if they will bring back Stewart, who is arbitration eligible, or look to acquire another third baseman.

“(Stewart) was in communication and reported that everything feels good just a few days ago but we haven’t seen him ourselves,” Epstein said.
