CHICAGO -- One rotation vacancy was filled for next week as manager Dale Sveum said that
Justin Germano will likely start Monday against the
Pittsburgh Pirates.
Germano, who was acquired from the Red Sox in July 19, has just one outing since joining the Cubs, a three-inning relief stint at St. Louis last week when he gave up one run on five hits. He was a starter at Triple-A Pawtucket, but has just his one outing with the Cubs since July 7.
Germano will take the rotation spot vacated by
Matt Garza, who is still suffering the effects of a sore right triceps. Garza won't return to the rotation until next week at the earliest.
Technically, the Cubs do not have a second rotation vacancy this week, but will Tuesday night against the Pirates if a
Ryan Dempster trade finally goes down.
