Chicago native Paris Parham was hired as an Illinois assistant coach on Tuesday, according to a source.

Parham completes Illinois coach John Groce’s staff and replaces the vacancy left by Isaac Chew, who departed Illinois for Marquette in late May.

Parham is well known in the Chicago basketball community and has recruited the area throughout his career. He played at Dunbar High School and coached at Morgan Park High School and Philips High School in Chicago’s Public League.

Parham was previously an assistant coach at Illinois State for five seasons. He left the Redbirds after last season when former Illinois State head coach Tim Jankovich departed for SMU.

Parham was also an assistant coach at Maryland-Eastern Shore and Minnesota State.
