Season recap: Van Riemsdyk was the surprise of training camp and made the Blackhawks’ roster after being in college the season before. He was gaining confidence and playing well when he fractured his patella during his 18th NHL game in November. He had another setback during his rehab in the AHL and had to undergo wrist surgery in April. He worked his way back again and was inserted into the lineup for the final four Stanley Cup finals games.

Season highlight: Van Riemsdyk hadn’t played in the NHL since Nov. 16 when he returned for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals on June 8.

Season lowlight: Van Riemsdyk fractured his patella when a puck struck him. He immediately fell to the ice in pain.

Final grade: B.

Inside the numbers: Van Riemsdyk had a 58.3 Corsi percentage in 22 games this season.

Quote: Van Riemsdyk on his teammates: “They're all great players. Getting to know them over the year, they just made me feel really comfortable, really great guys. Everyone in this locker room has been great to me all year, making me feel comfortable and welcome. It's gone a long way. I really appreciate it from all of them.”

What’s next: Van Riemsdyk returns to the Blackhawks next season. He’ll be hopeful to stay injury-free after suffering a season-ending ankle injury two years ago at New Hampshire and having two injuries last season. He’s expected to have a larger role next season.
