Blackhawks season review: Kimmo Timonen

Kimmo Timonen, defenseman

2014-15 cap hit: $1.2 million | Age: 40 | Season stats: 0 points, minus-3, 16 games

Season recap: There was a chance Timonen would never play hockey again after being diagnosed with blood clots last summer. He took medication and hoped for the best. He was cleared to begin practicing early in 2015 for the Philadelphia Flyers and was close to game action when he was traded to the Blackhawks in March. He never was able to regain his old game, and Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville lost confidence in him during the playoffs. After being scratched in four consecutive games, Timonen returned to the lineup for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals and played the final three games of the season.

Season highlight: Timonen was the first person Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews handed the Stanley Cup to at the United Center.

Season lowlight: Timonen was a healthy scratch for three games in the Western Conference finals and three games for the Stanley Cup finals.

Final grade: D+.

Inside the numbers: Timonen played 1,213 games in his career.

Quote: Timonen: “I leave this game as a Stanley Cup Champion, and I can’t ask for anything more than that.”

What’s next: Timonen previously said this would be his final season.
