Rapid Reaction: Avalanche 3, Blackhawks 2

DENVER -- Here’s a quick look at the Colorado Avalanche's 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday at the Pepsi Center:

How it happened: The Avalanche aren’t going to the playoffs, but they were still plenty motivated, with Jarome Iginla scoring on the power play to break a 2-2 tie with 32.9 seconds remaining in the third period. Iginla also broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the second period. Cody McLeod notched the Avalanche’s other goal. Brandon Saad and Patrick Sharp scored for Chicago. Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov had 28 saves, and Blackhawks goaltender Scott Darling had 21. Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith were healthy scratches; the Blackhawks sought to rest them.

What it means: The game had no meaning for either team. The Blackhawks’ playoff fate was decided earlier in the day, when the St. Louis Blues defeated the Minnesota Wild. The Blackhawks were locked into third place in the Central Division and a matchup with the Nashville Predators in the first round of the playoffs. The Avalanche had already been eliminated from contention. The Blackhawks ended the season on a four-game losing streak and finished 48-28-6. The Blackhawks went 24-12-5 at home and 24-16-1 on the road this season.

Player of the game: Iginla scored two goals and finished with 29 on the season.

Stat of the game: Defenseman Michal Rozsival, not normally a big part of the rotation, saw 22:39 of ice time, second among Blackhawks.

What’s next: The Blackhawks play the Predators in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Game 1 will be in Nashville.
