CHICAGO -- Chicago Blackhawks defenseman prospect Trevor van Riemsdyk just hasn’t had any luck with injuries the past few seasons.

Van Riemsdyk, a rookie, added to his injury woes by recently suffering an upper-body injury while with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs. Van Riemsdyk has been with the IceHogs since late February while working his way back from a left patella fracture, which occurred in November. He also had a season-ending ankle injury at the University of New Hampshire last season.

Van Riemsdyk’s latest injury puts further in question whether he will return to the Blackhawks this season. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville has previously said he was keeping the option open to bringing van Riemsdyk back to the NHL.

Van Riemsdyk is considered day-to-day with the upper-body injury and will not play for the IceHogs against the Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday, according an IceHogs’ spokesperson. Quenneville sounded as if he expected van Riemsdyk to miss some time.

“I guess he’s going to be out for a bit here,” Quenneville said Wednesday.

It’s unclear when van Riemsdyk’s late injury occurred. He played in the IceHogs’ last game on Saturday. He has three assists and is a plus-2 in eight games with the IceHogs.

Van Riemsdyk said last week he felt he was getting closer to his early-season form.

“I knew it was going to be a long, slow kind of thing,” van Riemsdyk said on March 25. “There are just days where you feel real good where you’re right there, about to be 100 percent. The next day you feel a little sore. It’s just a long process. Just got to stay on top of everything. Can’t fall behind in treatments and stuff like that. It’s been long and slow. It’s getting close. Now it’s just getting patient just because you’re so close and you want to be that last little bit. You just got to stick to everything, just get there in time.”

Van Riemsdyk played in 18 games with the Blackhawks to begin the season. He is in the first year of a two-year contract.
