Rapid Reaction: Islanders 3, Blackhawks 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Here’s a quick look at the Chicago Blackhawks' 3-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday night at Nassau Coliseum.

How it happened: Patrick Kane's wicked backhand 3 minutes, 46 seconds into the third period snapped a 1-1 tie, and the Blackhawks appeared to be in control. But Kyle Okposo and Lubomir Visnovsky scored 51 seconds apart to give the Islanders the lead. The game was close mostly thanks to Scott Darling, who was rock-solid in a second-period stretch during which Chicago was outshot 12-1. But there was little he could do when Cal Clutterbuck pounced on Duncan Keith's turnover and headed in all alone to even the score 1-1. That goal came just six seconds after Daniel Carcillo opened the scoring with 5:35 left in the second period. The Okposo goal would have been a tough stop for Darling, who surely would have liked to have another chance at Visnovsky's winner.

What it means: The loss snaps Chicago's season-high eight-game win streak. The Blackhawks (20-9-1, 41 points) fell out of first place in the Central Division after the St. Louis Blues won later Saturday to edge one point ahead.

Player of the game: The Islanders severely outhit the Blackhawks, and their physicality gave Chicago problems, particularly in its own end. That's where Darling stepped in and made a career-high 38 saves to keep this game close. He was particularly sharp in the second, making 16 saves and keeping the Blackhawks in the game. With a 3-1-0 record since being called up from the AHL's Rockford IceHogs on Dec. 2, Darling might have seized the backup goaltending job away from Antti Raanta while Corey Crawford recovers from a foot injury.

Stat of the game: 2-for-27. Entering the game with an NHL-best 91.5 percent success rate, Chicago's penalty kill has been a major key in its recent winning run. But the score the Blackhawks allowed Saturday night was a big one. After killing their first two penalties against the Islanders on Saturday, the Blackhawks allowed Okposo's tying goal with Kris Versteeg off for high sticking and 9:50 left in the third. It was just the second power-play goal allowed in the past 11 games for Chicago, whose opponents have gone 2-for-27 in that span.

What’s next: The Blackhawks have wrapped up their four-game road trip and immediately fly home to host the Calgary Flames at United Center on Sunday. That game opens a stretch during which they play four of five games at home.
