DETROIT -- Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville is one of many NHL coaches waiting to find out what kind of deal Detroit’s Mike Babcock can get done after this season.

It’s a deal many believe could set the high mark for head coaches in the league.

“It’s tough to talk about it and get into all that,” Quenneville said Friday at Joe Louis Arena. “Babber knows what he’s doing.”

Babcock, whose contract with the Red Wings is due to expire June 30, said during the offseason if a deal wasn’t in place prior to the start of the 2014-15 campaign, he would not negotiate a new one until the season was over.

And both sides have also stopped talking publicly regarding the situation.

Babcock’s deal pays him roughly $2 million a season.

“As far as positioning and where he’s at contractually, you know how he’s done here in Detroit,” Quenneville said. “That stuff will all work itself out, and that’s how I see it as well.”

Quenneville's deal with Chicago runs through the 2016-17 season.

Babcock, 51, is in his 10th season in Detroit.

He has led the Wings to a Stanley Cup and two conference championships.

Babcock set a franchise record last season with his 414th victory, passing Scotty Bowman and Jack Adams in the process.

He has also led Canada to consecutive Olympic gold medals.
