Bears' free-agent watch: Sherrod Martin prepared for life after football

Here is the ninth in an 18-part series examining the Chicago Bears' unrestricted free agents.

Name: Sherrod Martin

Position: Safety

Age: 31

NFL experience: Six years

2015 salary: $569,705 (prorated veteran minimum over 12 games)

2015 key statistics: One tackle; Five special teams tackles in 12 games

Probability to return: Low

Outlook: Martin has a lot of history with head coach John Fox, whom he also played for in Carolina -- Martin started 36 games for the Panthers from 2009-11. Martin did a serviceable job on special teams, but that’s usually a role reserved for younger, cheaper players. Unless Fox feels he simply cannot do without Martin's experience, the veteran safety is unlikely to be a priority to re-sign. But Martin is a smart guy, and he already has a future career lined up: barber. Martin, who cuts teammates hair, is one of the few football players who have planned for life after football. He plans to cut hair for a living. Martin is expected to be fine regardless of what Chicago management decides to do.
