Mel Kiper tabs Eddie Goldman as Day 2 early impact rookie

ESPN NFL Draft Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. studied the list of Day 2 draft picks (Rounds 2-3) to find early impact rookies, and nne Chicago Bears’ choice landed on Kiper’s radar – Florida State nose tackle Eddie Goldman.

While Bears general manager Ryan Pace stuck to drafting the best available player, Goldman, taken in the second round, also fills a need in the team’s new 3-4 defensive scheme.

With the exception of veteran Jeremiah Ratliff, and maybe 2014 second-round pick Ego Ferguson, the Bears lacked stout and powerful bodies capable of stopping the run from the nose tackle position. At 6-foot-4, 320 pounds, Goldman is built to do just that.

“He’s a true, low, strong nose tackle,” Pace said. “He’s played all over the defensive line, I think his best position is nose tackle; I really think he’s natural at that. Some guys just have a natural ability to play with a low center of gravity and leverage, and he definitely has it. It’s easy for him to get underneath blocks.”

Barring injury, Goldman is expected to jump immediately into the Bears’ rotation on the defensive line. There could be scenarios when Goldman and Ratliff line up together on the field in a four down-linemen look.
