This is the ninth in a series of 10 players the Chicago Bears could target with the No. 7 overall selection in the 2015 NFL draft.
Name: Brandon Scherff Position: Offensive tackle College: Iowa Vitals: 6-foot-4, 319 pounds Summary: The winner of the 2014 Outland Trophy, Scherff was named first-team All-Big Ten his final two years at Iowa. He started the final 26 games at left tackle after missing five games of his sophomore year in 2012 with a broken fibula and dislocated ankle. He played left guard for 10 games in 2011. Scherff carries the reputation of a nasty and physical run blocker. He was a maniac in the weight room at Iowa and plays through pain. Many scouts believe Scherff projects to be a right tackle in the NFL, but he also has the experience and ability to slide inside and play guard. No bells and whistles with this guy, just a solid player. ESPN NFL Draft Insiders call Scherff the toughest offensive lineman in the 2015 draft class. Fit: The Bears need to be sure Jordan Mills can recover from a lingering foot injury that caused him problems most of last season. If the foot remains an issue, the Bears have a need at right tackle, unless the plan is to eventually move Kyle Long outside. The beauty of Scherff is that he can play guard if that spot opens up. Positional versatility is key on the offensive line. Let’s not close the book on Mills, however the former fifth-round pick’s durability is a concern. Selecting Scherff will not excite the masses in Chicago, but keep in mind that John Fox wants to run the football. Run blocking happens to be Scherff’s specialty. Projection: ESPN NFL draft analysts Mel Kiper Jr. projects going No. 6 overall to the New York Jets in his 2015 Mock Draft 4.0; ESPN NFL draft analyst Todd McShay believes Scherff ends up at No. 9 to the New York Giants.
