A look at the quarterback position in the last of my 11-part series on where the money is for the Carolina Panthers:

Analysis: To have a two-time Pro Bowler as your starter and a one-time Pro Bowler as your backup and rank 21st in the league under the 2014 salary cap can't be a bad thing. The cap number will change significantly when the Panthers sign Newton to a long-term extension, likely before the 2015 season. But for now the Panthers are in about as good a position at this spot financially and talent-wise as any team in the league. Newton recently was ranked the 16th best quarterback in an ESPN.com insiders story. He was voted the top quarterback among the third-tier signal callers, barely missing out on the second tier. Considering he has the 17th highest cap value among quarterbacks this season, that is a deal. Forty-eight quarterbacks make more than Anderson, who has been Newton's backup the past three seasons. A Pro Bowl selection with Cleveland in 2007, the Panthers remain comfortable that he would be adequate should Newton be injured. Don't look for Webb or Blanchard to figure into the 53-man roster, so their cap numbers really are not a factor. General manager Dave Gettleman came from a New York Giants organization that typically kept only two quarterbacks active, and the Panthers kept only two last season. At best they will keep a third quarterback on the practice squad.
