A look at players the Panthers might consider with 25th pick: Carl Davis

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Today we continue our look at players the Carolina Panthers might consider with the 25th pick in the NFL draft, which kicks off April 30.

You’re probably wondering why I would put another defensive tackle on this list. The reason is simple: General manager Dave Gettleman doesn’t pass on good defensive tackles.

No. 5

Name: Carl Davis

Position: DT

College: Iowa

Career highlights: Davis is a two-time All-Big Ten selection. He had nine tackles for loss and two sacks in 2014. Was named the most outstanding practice player at the Senior Bowl, where his stock rose to first-round level in the eyes of many.

Why he would be a good pick for Carolina: You’ve read this a few times before when I mentioned a defensive tackle, but it rings true perhaps even more for Davis than any other. At 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, he would fall into that category Gettleman calls too good to pass up as the best player available. Gettleman took Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short in the first two rounds in 2013, so there’s no reason to think he wouldn’t take another here with veterans Dwan Edwards and Colin Cole at the end of their careers. The Panthers run a four-man rotation at tackle, so adding a player like Davis to the group would be a solid long-term choice.
