Panthers senior offensive assistant John Ramsdell retires

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers senior offensive assistant John Ramsdell has retired after 19 NFL seasons.

Ramsdell is best known for helping Kurt Warner win two league MVP awards and Super Bowl XXXIV (1999 season) with the St. Louis Rams and the "Greatest Show on Turf."

He led the development of three Pro Bowl quarterbacks -- Warner and Marc Bulger at St. Louis, and Phillip Rivers at San Diego. The 2014 season was his only one with the Panthers.

"I’ve had the privilege of coaching with John in Carolina and San Diego, and have always been impressed with his knowledge for the game and his ability to get the best out of his players," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in a statement. "He has had a wonderful career, and I wish him the best."

Under Ramsdell, Warner won the league MVP award in 1999 and 2001, and Bulger had three of the top six passing games in Rams history.

Ramsdell coached the St. Louis tight ends and H-backs from 1996-98 before becoming the quarterbacks coach in 1999. He served in that role through the 2005 season, except for 2003, when he coached the wide receivers.

Torry Holt led the NFL in receptions (117) and receiving yards (1,696) that season.
