Panthers in for chilly reception in Minnesota

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- If the predicted temperature of 19 degrees for Sunday's game at Minnesota doesn't change significantly, it will be the second coldest in the history of the Carolina Panthers.

The coldest?

That would be 3 degrees at Green Bay's Lambeau Field for the NFC Championship during the 1996 season.

The Panthers lost that game 30-13. They are 2-6 when the temperature is 32 degrees or colder, which it will for certain be for the 1 p.m. game at the University of Minnesota field where the Vikings are playing while their new indoor arena is being built.

Carolina's only victories when the temperature has been 32 degrees or colder are a 13-6 win at Cleveland (25 degrees) on December 1, 2002 and a 23-10 win over New Orleans in Charlotte (32 degrees) on January 3, 2010.

Their six cold-weather losses at Green Bay, Pittsburgh (2010, 27 degrees), Denver (1997, 28 degrees), Kansas City (2000, 30 degrees), Pittsburgh (1999, 32 degrees) and Philadelphia (2006, 32 degrees) have been by a combined score of 163-74.

The good news is no snow is in the forecast for Minneapolis.
