Rex Ryan: Bills' challenge process failed vs. Chiefs

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Rex Ryan said Monday that the Buffalo Bills' process for challenging plays broke down in their 30-22 loss Sunday to the Kansas City Chiefs, when Ryan unsuccessfully challenged two plays and did not challenge three other close calls.

"I'm not going to name names or anything like that, but obviously, there is a process in place," Ryan said. "Did that process let us down yesterday? Absolutely did. It failed on a couple of occasions obviously. I think for the most part, that thing's been pretty decent."

Ryan said after the game he was "not aware" of Jeremy Maclin's 37-yard catch in the second quarter in which the Chiefs receiver appeared to trap the ball against the ground. The Bills did not challenge that play and allowed a Kansas City touchdown on the next snap.

"I had no idea about the catch by Maclin -- the one that was not a catch -- until I came down for the press conference and you guys asked me about it," Ryan said Monday. "And I was like, I had no idea that was even in question. So that ought to tell you that it wasn't -- for whatever reason, I was not informed of that."

The Bills plan to make changes to their challenge process, Ryan said Monday, but he declined to offer specifics.

"[It's] something we clearly have to improve in," he said. "I thought it was going well this year, but obviously we need to find a way to get it where it's better, where something like where people at home can see something and we don't see it -- to me, that can't happen. And it won't happen in the future."

Team chaplain James Trapp was seen on CBS cameras telling Ryan, "No, no, no" after Bills receiver Chris Hogan appeared to catch a pass late in the fourth quarter but the play was ruled an incompletion.

"Yeah, he’s not in the process at all," Ryan said Monday. "He’s down on the field and things. I think he’s echoing what was being said. But I get a lot of voices, but the one that is important to me is the one that’s in the headset."
