Marquise Goodwin squarely on Bills' roster bubble

Continuing a month-long series analyzing players who are on the Buffalo Bills' roster bubble and where they potentially fit in 2015:

Name: Marquise Goodwin

Position: Wide receiver

Age: 24

2014 stats: 10 games, 1 reception (42 yards)

Chance of making 53-man roster: 50 percent

Why he should make it: As a third-round pick back in 2013, Goodwin is one of the most intriguing players on the Bills' roster bubble. I'd call his chances a toss-up at this point, or an even 50-50 split. Goodwin remains one of the fastest players in the NFL and any coach or GM will think twice about letting that sort of asset slip to another team. If Goodwin can learn from receivers coach Sanjay Lal -- who is an upgrade over Rob Moore and Ike Hilliard, Goodwin's position coaches the past two seasons -- and become a better route runner, the Bills can probably make room at the bottom of their depth chart for Goodwin.

Why he shouldn't make it: Goodwin has been a disappointment in his first two seasons and has struggled to stay healthy. Coach Rex Ryan even took a subtle shot after Goodwin was shaken up during minicamp, saying that it wasn't the first time he's seen Goodwin slow to get up after a play but that he was "fine." Goodwin's physical toughness and route-running remain his biggest obstacles to becoming an established NFL receiver. After losing his job as the Bills' kick returner last season, Goodwin enters a prove-it third training camp with the team in which he'll have to show his skills both on offense and special teams to a new coaching staff. Seventh-round rookie Dez Lewis will have the inside track to becoming the sixth receiver on the 53-man roster with a respectable preseason.
