Bills' Ross Cockrell, yet to emerge, could be fighting for roster spot

Continuing a month-long series analyzing players who are on the Buffalo Bills' roster bubble and where they potentially fit in 2015:

Name: Ross Cockrell

Position: Cornerback

Age: 23

2014 stats: 7 games, 1 tackle

Chance of making 53-man roster: 55 percent

Why he should make it: Cockrell was the Bills' fourth-round pick last spring and was essentially redshirted last season, seeing some very limited action once Leodis McKelvin suffered a season-ending ankle injury. With McKelvin and fellow cornerback Stephon Gilmore recovering from offseason surgery, Cockrell saw plenty of first-team reps in organized team activities and minicamp this spring. The results weren't great, but if the Bills waived Cockrell this August, they'd be cutting the cord after only 16 months with Cockrell on their team. Why not give him one more season of tutoring by defensive backs coaches Donnie Henderson and Tim McDonald before deciding whether to move on?

Why he shouldn't make it: General manager Doug Whaley has stated that he isn't against drafting a cornerback each year, simply because of the importance of that position in today's NFL. That could put young cornerbacks like Cockrell in more of a "prove it" spot, with the Bills essentially creating a series of one-year experiments to see if they can strike gold at the position. With 2015 second-round pick Ronald Darby the latest addition to the cornerback depth chart, there might not be room for Cockrell, a limited athlete who hasn't shown the same natural instincts for the position as Darby or nickel back Nickell Robey. In that sense, cutting Cockrell wouldn't be a big loss this summer; the Bills could simply draft another cornerback next spring and see what they can get out of that player.
